Girls varsity basketball continued non-league action against Rancho Christian on Tuesday night. The game was highly anticipated, not only because it was against cross-town rival, but because Lions’ senior guard Sydney Moran was just 28 away from 1,000 career points.
Linfield jumped out to a 25-8 lead with an and one followed by a three pointer from Keslyn Henson to close the first quarter. The Eagles responded in the second quarter, holding the Lions to just 12 points. Linfield still led 37-25 at halftime.
Moran began the game at 972 points, and scored 15 in the first half. She started the second half with a missed a three pointer, but got her own rebound to score the layup. Shortly after, Moran would sank a three to tally point 993. Linfield held Rancho to just two points until the final minute allowing the Eagles to score a basket and a pair of free throws, but the Lions were still up 49-31 to finish the third quarter.
Linfield would go on a 21 point shooting spree in the fourth, beginning with back to back layups from Henson and Moran, to put her career total at 997. Following a Rancho timeout, Moran drained another three to total 1,000 career points with the assist from Henson. The Lions went on to defeat the Eagles 70-48. They will enter the So Cal Classic Tournament next week at Cal Lutheran, facing St. Jeanne’s in the first round of pool play on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
